Wastage of Electrical Energy is one of the biggest challenges of our times, especially due to appliances that are left on stand-by mode. To help people understand their mistake of leaving devices on stand-by and how much power they consume; Sailesh Kumar, Himanshu Singh and Kunal Tanwar have developed Arduino Power Meter. Both of them are B.Tech students at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, and decided to develop an innovative power meter to save electricity from appliances that consume power in stand-by mode and help people gogreen while also saving money.


People often intentionally/unintentionally do not turn off appliances from the main supply, which in turn, results in wastage of energy and high electricity bills. This is because electrical appliances consume some amount of energy even on the standby mode. Thus, to create awareness among people and reduce a significant amount of energy loss, Sailesh, Himanshu and Kunal created the 'Arduino Power Meter' that can effectively calculate the amount of energy wasted when an appliance is left on standby mode.

The Arduino Power Meter calculates wasted energy by using the product of current from a Current Transformer (CT) and voltage calculated by a voltage divider circuit. The sensitivity of CT can be increased by introducing external turns to it and the resolution of the meter is in the order of 0.001. The calculation of power consumed on standby and active mode is done using an Arduino Nano on an ATMEL studio code and is powered by a 9V battery and uses a 16x2 LCD display. The standby mode units are calculated for a period of 28 days.

This coupled with the advent of new electronic products and the development of networked homes and offices; standby power consumption is expected to rise further. In such times, Sailesh, Himanshu and Kunal’s innovative Arduino Power Meter will not only help the consumers in keeping a watch over the amount of energy they waste, thereby reducing energy bills but will also contribute to saving our natural resources, leaving the planet cleaner and greener for future generations.
