Jhalak Chandra is an enterprising student who has proposed a solution to enhance school and student safety. Jhalak is a Class 9 student at Delhi Public School (DPS), Greater Noida, who has envisioned an anti-bullying system to detect instances of bullying on the school premises.
Project Description
Cyberbullying is a serious concern for all schools across classes from kindergarten to senior secondary levels. The act of bullying takes place in various forms, so implementing checks across platforms can be a challenging task. Jhalak, therefore, proposed an anti-bullying system that she believes can help schools keep a check on instances of cyberbullying.
With the help of resources and datasets available on public platforms, Jhalak has proposed an automated system using artificial intelligence techniques. She discovered that many platforms offer user-friendly environments for training AI models, so she chose a simple text classification technique to train the AI system. When combined with the GPS-enabled school identity cards, the system can also help locate the area of the occurrence of bullying.
The AI training process involved feeding the system with examples of text, some of which contained bullying language and some that did not. This way, the AI model can learn to distinguish between the two languages. The available datasets on bullying included examples from real-life situations where instances of bullying had occurred. With the help of these datasets, Jhalak was able to train the AI system to recognize an act of bullying.
After several attempts, Jhalak managed to develop a proof-of-concept for the anti-bullying system. The system can flag potentially harmful language for review and has been able to accurately detect many instances of bullying.
Jhalak Chandra is a finalist for the Most Innovative Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) award because she is focused on solving real-world problems using AI and aims to create a secure and inclusive educational environment. Her solution for combating cyberbullying presents great potential for a commonly faced problem across schools.
