Award Category - Best Initiative (Community Service) Introduction - Chiranjeev Bezbaruah is an educator teaching UG students at Kaliabor College, Assam Achievement - Developed a technology to remove arsenic from groundwater |
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that can pose a significant threat to human health when it is present in high concentrations in groundwater. Millions of people worldwide rely on such contaminated sources for drinking, cooking, and irrigation and they unknowingly ingest this toxic metal. Long-term exposure to arsenic can lead to serious health problems, particularly in children.
Chiranjeev’s Initiative to Fight Arsenic in Groundwater
Chiranjeev took the initiative to develop a technology aimed at reducing arsenic levels in groundwater. Through the implementation of his patented technology, known as the capsule technique, he has successfully developed a method to diminish arsenic concentrations in drinking water within the local area.
This initiative provides easy removal of arsenic from groundwater based on coagulation and precipitation method.
Alongside this, Chiranjeev has undertaken various other projects, such as developing an accessible technology for converting single-use plastic into construction materials, securing a granted patent and two pending applications, utilizing waste bamboo for crafting affordable disposable ballpoint pens, and collaborating with students on creating an economical feed for broilers.
Additionally, he conducts surveys to identify arsenic contamination in local areas, raises awareness through programs, engages students in problem-solving endeavours, works towards the conservation of local flora and fauna, and promotes scientific knowledge through popular talks at sister institutes.
Chiranjeev Bezbaruah is a finalist for Best Initiative (Community Service) because his innovative solution showcases his commitment to addressing environmental concerns and ensuring safer water sources for the community.
